It will be posted on or about the last day of every month to alt.cult-movies.rocky-horror, and alt.cult-movies. I'm just a poor schmuck who thought it would be fun to do one, so if there's an error that you notice somewhere, don't get all upset - just e-mail me about it. Please keep in mind that this is all in good clean (?) fun. Also, I'm always open to suggestions, changes, or new ideas, so if you think of something that you feel should be in the FAQ, don't be afraid to let me know. And remember: Always practice Safe FAQing. -P7A77 =============================================================================== Table O' Contents ----------------- Section 0 - How to use this FAQ Section 1 - Basics about RHPS and where to see it 1a. What does RHPS mean? Random House Personal Slaves Really Hideous Penguin Sundaes Really Horny Purple Salamanders Really Horrible People Shouting Ridiculous Horny-Person's Story Road House Personal Shipping ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1b. What does RHPS *REALLY* mean? The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's a movie. Check out what newsgroup you're in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1c. What does FAQ mean? Frequently Asked Questions. This is the RHPS FAQ, or the Rocky Horror Picture Show Freqently Asked Questions. They're the questions that are most frequently asked about The Rocky Horror Picture Show. If a question is asked frequently about The Rocky Horror Picture Show, it would be in here. Likewise, if The Rocky Horror Picture Show had questions frequently asked about it, they would be in here. As would frequently asked questions about The Rocky Horror Picture Show. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1d. How can *I* see RHPS? Well, there are six main ways: (a) Rent it at your local video store (b) Buy it at your local video store (or mail-order) (c) Steal it from your local video store (d) Rent/Buy/Steal the film and get a projector (e) Watch it on television (US, UK, and Canada) (f) Go to a movie theatre ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1e. What theatres show RHPS? Lots of 'em - usually the most trashy looking ones in town. Most major cities have shows on a regular basis, and others have special showings throughout the year. Most college campuses will have special showings throughout the year as well (usually during Halloween and at the end of a term). A constantly updating theatre list is posted on the 15th of every month to alt.cult-movies.rocky-horror, alt.answers, and news.answers. It is archived at rtfm.mit.edu (and its mirrors) in the directory /pub/usenet/news.answers/movies/rocky-horror-theaters. For an e-mail copy of the theatre list at any time, send an e-mail request to: bc770@cleveland.Freenet.Edu ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1f. What's the easiest way to find out where RHPS is playing in my area? There're a few ways of doin' that, too: (a) Become a memeber of the Fan Club and ask Sal Piro for a list (b) Check the list posted every month on alt.cult-movies.rocky-horror (c) Call a random theatre in your city and ask them if they know (d) Look in a newspaper for theatre listings =============================================================================== Section 2 - A bit of history and changes ............................................................................... 2a. How did RHPS start? The movie was originally a play, written by Richard O'Brien, with the working title "They Came from Denton High." It was changed to "The Rocky Hor-Roar Show", and eventually to "The Rocky Horror Show". It premiered on June 16, 1973, at The Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in London, England. After a short while, it was moved from the 60-seat Upstairs theatre to a converted movie house, and then to the King's Road Theatre, which seats 500. It was named best musical of 1973 by the British drama critics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2b. Where did it go from there? After about ten months, Lou Adler (the owner at the time of the Roxy theatre in Los Angeles, California, USA) saw the musical and brought it to The United States, in the Roxy. A bit after that, it was made into the movie. As a promotion for the movie, it also had a (disasterous) run on Broadway. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2c. What are the cast lists from the three original shows? London (The Theatre Upstairs) Narrator - Jonathan Adams Frank-N-Furter - Tim Curry Riff-Raff - Richard O'Brien Brad Majors - Christopher Malcolm Janet Weiss - Belinda Sinclair Rocky Horror - Rayner Bourton Magenta and Usherette - Patricia Quinn Columbia - Little Nell Eddie and Dr. Evrett Scott - Paddy O'Hagan Los Angeles (Roxy) Magenta and Usherette - Jamie Donnely Janet Weiss - Abigail Haness Brad Majors - B. Miller Narrator - Graham Jarvis Riff-Raff - Bruce Scott Columbia - Boni Enten Dr. Frank-N-Furter - Tim Curry Rocky Horror - Kim Milford Eddie and Dr. Scott - Meatloaf New York (Broadway) Magenta and Usherette - Jamie Donnelly Janet Weiss - Abigail Haness Brad Majors - B. Miller Narrator - William Newman Riff-Raff - Richard O'Brien Columbia - Boni Enten Dr. Frank-N-Furter - Tim Curry Rocky Horror - Kim Milford Eddie and Dr. Scott - Meatloaf ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2d. What is the cast list for the movie? Dr. Frank-N-Furter - Tim Curry Janet Weiss - Susan Sarandon Brad Majors - Barry Bostwick Riff Raff - Richard O'Brien Magenta and Lips (Trixie) - Patricia Quinn Columbia - Little Nell Dr. Everett V. Scott - Jonathan Adams Rocky Horror - Peter Hinwood Eddie - Meatloaf Criminologist - Charles Gray ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2e. What is the list of songs from the movie? Science Fiction/Double Feature Dammit, Janet Over at the Frankenstein Place The Time Warp Sweet Transvestite Sword of Damocles I Can Make you a Man Hot Patootie- Bless My Soul I Can Make you a Man (reprise) Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me Eddie Rose Tint My World I'm Going Home Super Heroes Science Fiction/Double Feature (reprise) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2f. What changes to the songs were made for the movie? OVER AT THE FRANKENSTEIN PLACE: In "Over at the Frankenstein Place", Brad should have a verse all to himself - it was never filmed. It goes like this: BRAD: I can see the flag fly, I can see the rain; Just the same, there has got to be Something better here for you and me. SWORD OF DAMOCLES: "Sword of Damocles" had a few extra verses from the narrator/criminologist that were never filmed. They go like this: (Before Rocky's third verse) NARR: Rocky Horror, you need peace of mind, I want to tell you that you're doing fine. You're the product of another time, So feeling low? Well, that's no crime. CHARLES ATLAS SONG/I CAN MAKE YOU A MAN: The words for "Charles Atlas Song/I Can Make You A Man" had significant changes made from the stage to the screen. The stage version is written out, with movie changes in parenthasis. FRANK: A weakling, weighing ninety-eight pounds, Got sand in his face when kicked to the ground. (Will get sand...) His girl split on him, and then, in the gym, (And soon in the gym, with a determined chin,) The sweat from his pores as he worked for his cause (... works...) Made him glisten and gleam; he was thin, but quite clean. (Will make him...) (he'll be pink, and quite clean.) He was in good shape, but the wrong shape. (He'll be a strong man, but the wrong man.) He ate nutritious, high protien, and swallowed raw eggs. (He'll eat nutritious...) (... swallow...) Tried to build up his shoulders, his chest, arms, and legs. (Try to...) Then a magazine advert with a new muscle plan (Such an effort, if he only knew of my plan,) Said in just seven days, I can make you a man. (In just seven...) He'd done press-ups, and chin-ups, cleaned and jerked, done the snatch. (He'll do press-ups, and chin-ups, do the snatch, clean, and jerk.) Thought dynamic tension just must be a catch. (He thinks dynamic tension must be hard work) So he re-read the advert to see how it ran, (Such strenuous living, I just don't understand,) It said in just seven days, I can make you a man. (In just seven...) ONCE IN A WHILE: After Janet sings "Toucha, Toucha, Touch Me", Brad should have a song called "Once in a While" - it was filmed but left out of the movie. It goes like this: BRAD: Once in a while, she don't want to call you, Speaking on the telephone. And once in your life, she won't want to know you; You look around, the one you've found, she is gone. And that's all the time that it takes For a heart to turn to stone; The sweeter the wine, the harder to make the break, You hear something about someone you thought you'd known. So baby, don't cry like there's no tomorrow, After the night, there's a brand new day; And there'll be no pain, and no more sorrow, So wash your face and phone my place, it'll be okay. And that's all the time that it takes For a heart to beat again; So give me a sign that a lover makes, You look around, the one you've found is back again. SUPERHEROES: The last song (aside from the closing credits) is "Superheroes." Brad and Janet have verses in it that were used in the original version of the movie. They were cut out of the re-release, and included in some of the re-re-releases. The pirated Japanese version of the videotape (with subtitles) has the song, as do the mono UK versions, but all official US releases of the video, including re-releases, and the stereo UK version don't. The laserdisc currently out, and the 20th anniversary one to be released in 1995 will not have the song in it, either. The song goes like this: (Scene: The castle has just taken off) BRAD: (sung) I've done a lot, God knows I've tried To find the truth; I've even lied. But all I know is down inside I'm Bleeding. JANET: (sung) And Super Heroes come to feast, To taste the flesh not yet deceased. And all I know is still the beast is Feeding. BACK: (lots of ooo-oooh's and aaa-aaah's) CRIM: (spoken) And crawling on the planet's face, Some insects called the human race. Lost in time, and lost in space. And meaning. BACK: (sung) Meaning. (Note: this last verse by the Criminologist is in all versions) SCIENCE FICTION/DOUBLE FEATURE (REPRISE): This song was not changed and was used during the closing credits. However, it was cut at the same time that Superheroes was cut, and The Time Warp was put in its place. Re-re-releases, all US video versions, and the UK mono video version have the song, as does the videodisc version. The UK stereo version does not. =============================================================================== Section 3 - Audience Participation ............................................................................... 3a. What's with this audience participation I keep hearing about? It's a main part of RHPS. The audience "calls-back" to the screen. These are often called "call-backs" or "lines." Also, in various parts of the movie, the audience throws things all over the place and makes a real big mess. Lots o' fun. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3b. What should I take to a showing of RHPS? Yourself. Lots of friends. Lots of money to give to the cast memebers. Many people, largely perceived to be virgins, have taken it upon themselves to bring weird items, such as shaving cream, spaghetti, rocks, Toyota Tercels, etc. While this may be allowed by the theatre, it will unfailingly cause the majority of the crowd to consider you (rightly) an idiot. Here's a semi-complete listing of the more popular items: Rice Newspaper Water Guns Lighter/Matches/Flashlight/Flame-Thrower/Whatever Noise Makers Rubber Gloves Confetti (you can tear up the newspaper for this one) Toilet Paper (preferably Scott brand) Toast Bells Hot Dogs Playing Cards It's up to you to figure out when to use these. There's a general rule most people seem to follow: "If you are hit in the face with a hot dog chunk, then now must be the time to throw hot dogs!" Unfortunately, this rule doesn't work, because there are always the high school freshman who get off from throwing anything, anytime. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3c. What should I wear to a showing of RHPS? Nothing - or at least as little as possible. Well, lots of black is usually good. As is lingerie. As are fishnets. Basically, the weirder the better. You'll feel strange leaving the house (or office), but once you get within a hundred yards or so of the theatre, you should fit right in. This section is, of course, for the people who are part-timers. Most veteran Rocky-goers dress however they want to usually, and don't give a flying fuck WHAT other people think. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3d. Should I worry that I don't know many of the "call-backs" at my first show? No. This is a major misconception about RHPS. Nobody is going to think any less of you if you just sit back and have a good time. Before you know it, you'll know more than you ever really wanted to. Just relax and enjoy yourself (or the people around you, if you wish). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3e. Should I worry that I'll be embarassed at my first show? Probably. Most places have something called a "virgin sacrifice." (A virgin is someone who has never seen the show before. If you've seen it on video, that doesn't count; that just makes you a video slut - you're still a virgin.) The sacrifice can be something as tame as singing to the virgins to something as raunchy as... well, let your mind wander. The majority of them are just in good fun and aren't out to really hurt anyone. The cast wants you to return for more and more showings - they're not going to piss you off so that you never go back. You can try to hide, but if anyone at all in the theatre knows you, they will betray you. Count on it. Don't worry about it and let them have their fun. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3f. Should I locate an audience participation script and memorize it? A resounding NO! You could, but you'd be really lame if you did, tho'. Just go and listen. Most people start picking up on a lot of them by their third show, and they start making their own up a few shows later. The scripts are made so that the veterans can exchange lines from different cities and to find out who says what, etc. Most of the more popular ones in circulation are pretty lame themselves, anyway. =============================================================================== Section 4 - RHPS Errors and Trivia ............................................................................... 4a. - Errors in editing & accuracy, and various trivia Oh, there are so many! Here's a chronological list of a few of them: --The lips in the opening credits are Magenta's --Many of the wedding guests are also Transylvanians --One guest (a brunette woman) runs up to be in the wedding picture twice --The priest at the church is Dr. Frank-N-Furter --The workers at the church are Riff Raff, Magenta, and Columbia --On the video, the boom (microphone) can be seen during parts of the wedding scene --The Denton billboard in the cemetary could be considered an ad for a Television station (see Shock Treatment) --The chalk heart that Brad draws on the church changes shape in different shots --Janet's purse in Dammit, Janet is on the ground behind her in one shot and in front of her in another --The Criminoligist claims that it is a "late November evening" yet Nixon's resignation speech is playing on the car radio (he resigned in August) --The copy of the Plain Dealer that Janet has is not the one from the day of Nixon's resignation (it could be from a late November evening, tho') --The grandfather clock reads 12 o'clock, but rings 7 times before Time Warp, and 10 times after --The Transylvanian with the tray of hour d'ourves puts it down and in a different shot suddenly has it again --Columbia's hat can be seen on the ground right before her tap-dance, but when she starts dancing it's on her head --Janet is still screaming after she faints before Sweet Transvestite --The amazing buttoning-unbuttoning shirt that Brad has on while Magetna is stripping him --The position of Rocky's arms and the types of moves he's doing change in different shots during Charle's Atlas Song --Eddie's bracers disappear at one stage while rolling around on the floor with Columbia --There is blood on the freezer floor before Frank hits Eddie with the pick --While he's activating the magnet, Frank starts to raise his left leg, but when the camera shot changes, his right leg is lifted --The first shot of Dr. Scott going up the stairs has a piece of carpet turned over by the wire pulling the wheelchair --The first shot of Dr. Scott going up the stairs was supposed to be edited out, but never was (or so rumour has it) --While Rocky is proposing a toast to Janet, Riff's hand can be seen pulling the napkin out of Dr. Scott's glass - and he does it AGAIN a few moments later --Riff serves Brad a slice of meat in a close-up of Brad, and then again in a wide shot --In Planet Schmanet, Janet, Frank pulls down Janet's bra strap, but it's back in place in the next shot --The tattoo on Frank's arm is washed off in the pool during the floor show, reappears for the last bit of the floor show, is washed off again at the end of the floor show, and is on again at the end of I'm Going Home --The last few seconds in the "flashback" of Riff's and Magenta's never appears elsewhere in the film from that camera angle --Brad and Janet are helping Dr. Scott out of the castle without a wheelchair, but Dr. Scott is laying on a broken wheelchair during Superheroes There are plenty more, too. Keep your eyes peeled. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4b. Ask around. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6d. - Is there a sequel to RHPS? No. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6e. - What about Shock Treatment? It's not a sequel, not a prequel. It's just another movie. Granted, it happens after RHPS happens (we assume), but it's no more a sequel to RHPS than Silence of the Lambs is a sequel to Manhunter (ask the folks on a.c-m for that one). Whereas RHPS is a satire of the B-movies, Shock Treatment is a satire of television and game shows. The town of Denton has become one big television studio, and Brad and Janet get swept away in it. I won't give too much of the plot away, because it is actually a good movie if you watch it a few times. Some songs to be on the lookout for include "Bitchin' in the Kitchen", "Little Black Dress", and "The Best Thing You Could Ever Do Is Die" (I don't have an official soundtrack, so official titles may vary. Check local listings). Richard O'Briend and Patricia Quinn return as Cosmo and Nation McKinley (many people believe that they are really Riff Raff and Magenta hiding out). (Little) Nell Campell is Nurse Ansalong. Charles Gray is Judge Oliver Wright. Brad and Janet are played by two new people. They sing better than Barry and Susan, but Janet can't lipsync for anything. A complete listing of cast members is as such: Dr. Cosmo McKinley - Richard O'Brien Dr. Nation McKinley - Patricia Quinn Brad Majors - Cliff DeYoung Janet Majors - Jessica Harper [gotta look at my video again...] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6f. - What about Revenge of the Old Queen? Like that's ever going to happen. Richard O'Brien has been working on that movie (the OFFICIAL sequel) for years now, and it shows no signs of ever being made. Look for it at about the same time Hell freezes over. For those truly interested, tho', new songs will include "Short End of the Stick", "Gentleman Caller", and "Never Let Your Daughter Date an Alien". New characters are Lord DeLordy and Ray Ammbo. Richard O'Brien will continue playing Riff Raff. Most of the original actors from RHPS either do not want to be in it or are hesitant (including Patricia Quinn, which is odd because she's stuck by our boy Richard through most of his word (Disaster, Shock Treatment, etc)). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6g. - Anything else? --The Rocky Horror Picture Show Computer Game - released by Activision in 1985. Players assume the role of Brad or Janet and roam around the Frankenstein Place trying to find pieces of a machine to save the character not being played. It has a rockin' computerized version of Time Warp as background music. You only get one "life" and it's easy to "die", so the game can get a bit monotonous and frustrating at times. Worth picking up, tho'. =============================================================================== Section 7 - Where are they now?
